This Is a Rare Antique Titanic Era OSTBY & BARTON Signed, Solid 10K White Gold Emerald Cut Purple Amethyst Stone Ring, in Great Condition. The gold color looks yellowish in this picture simply because I had to adjust the color to try to accurately depict the color of the stone, which is a gorgeous deep grape color. In doing this, a yellowish tint was inadvertently added to the whole photo. The gold is white and very white. I felt that getting the stone color was the most important part of the pictures but it us unflattering to the ring, because if names the shiny white look yellowish and it's not remotely yellow in person. The picture on my hand is the best to judge the gold color. There Is a 9mm By 7mm purple amethyst Stone set in the 4 pronged ring mount. The shoulders and sides of this ring are very ornate. The design around the border and down the sides is stamped and filigreed.
Maker's Mark is inside with OB 10K And Maltese Cross that was Ostby and Barton's signature stamp in most of their later pieces. This duo had a very large body of work and I am always surprised by the diversity and quality of their pieces. Some are worth a very large sum and I have seen very simple infant rings made by this well-known partnership. I also have a few other Ostby and Barton pieces for collectors if at all interested. Just shoot me a note.
The stone on this ring is special. It is a large emerald cut, deep purple mined stone that is nearly flawless. It has been looked at and appraised by a licensed GIA Gemologist. It has enormous collector value based on the Ostby and Barton maker and the Maltese Cross Mark on the inside shank. Please be aware that my pieces are not meant in any way to be investment pieces. Please do not purchase thinking you can resell for more than you paid. My jewelry is priced at fair market value for vintage and antique pieces. Do not be dismayed if you purchase it and then have it appraised and it does not appraise higher than you paid. It may increase in value with time, or it may not. I want you to purchase it because you love it, not so you can resell it at a higher price.
The ring is size 4 and 3/4 but is easily sizable up at least a few sizes. Please keep this in mind when looking at rings that you love but aren't in your size. Most rings can easily and with very little cost or time, be changed in size, with few exceptions. Many rings have been sized numerous times by the time they reach a hundred or so.
This gorgeous ring would make a fabulous Engagement ring or a lovely right hand or cocktail ring. It looks great on and any size woman can carry it off. the stone is reflective and in wonderful vintage condition. The corner mounts are solid, with the metal being a bit thin on the mounts, so please keep this in mind when wearing with snaggable clothing. A snag into fabric or a hard substance could bend these prongs as they have worn thinner with age than they started out, but I was assured by my goldsmith that the prongs are secure and will hold the stone for many generations with proper care .
Regardless, all settings on rings and other jewelry should be carefully checked over on a regular basis for wear or damage. I once had a carat of brilliant cut pink diamond fall out and didn't notice it until the end of the day. Of course I had been a thousand places that day and had no hope of finding it. It was heartbreaking, but taught me a valuable lesson regarding the importance of maintenance checkups on valuable and beloved gems. Your jewelry is set in a relatively soft metal if it is set in gold, and our hands endure much throughout the day. Someone in my family probably ate the stone with their dinner! Teenage boys don't chew their food anyway, I have noticed....😜.
